Household & members

Household & members

Kerfuff distinguishes between members (people with logins) and profiles (people on the calendar). Understanding this makes it easier to set up a household that works for everyone.

Profiles vs members

Profile

A person on the calendar. Has a name, a colour, and optionally an avatar and birthday. Profiles can exist without any login — useful for young children or anyone who uses the display but never signs in.

Example: Tommy (age 6) — has a profile so his events appear in his colour, but no login.

Member

A login account. Has an email address, a password or OAuth connection, and a role. Members can sign in to the app, manage events and settings. A member can be linked to a profile.

Example: Sarah (adult) — has a login and her member account is linked to her profile.

Linking your profile

Go to Settings → Account → My profile to link your login to a household profile. This enables your avatar to appear in the sidebar and tasks to be shown correctly on profile-scoped displays.

Roles explained

Every member has a role that controls what they can see and do. The household has one owner; all other members have one of the roles below.

Owner

Full control. Manages billing, can change any member's role, and can transfer ownership. There can only be one owner per household.

Adult

Can do everything except manage billing and member roles. Create events, manage chores, connect calendars, add displays.

Teen

Can add and edit events and chores. Cannot delete events or manage household settings.

Child

Can view the calendar and tick chores. Cannot add, edit or delete events. Cannot change any settings.

Viewer

Read-only access. Can see everything but cannot make any changes.

Only the owner can change member roles. Go to Settings → Household → Members.

Inviting someone

  1. 1

Go to Settings → Household → Invite

Owners and adults can generate invite links.

  2. 2

    Choose a role

Select the role the new member should have: Adult, Teen, Child, or Viewer.

  3. 3

    Share the link

Copy the link and send it via WhatsApp, text, or email. The link expires after 7 days.

  4. 4

    They join

The person opens the link, enters their name and creates a password (or signs in with an existing Kerfuff account). They are added to your household immediately.

Invite links are single-use

Each invite link can only be used once and expires after 7 days. Generate a new link for each person you want to invite.

Child accounts

Children do not need an email address. Kerfuff supports email-free child logins that are accessed via a magic link generated by a parent or owner.

Creating a child login

  1. 1.Go to Settings → Household → Members.
  2. 2.Tap 'Add child login' next to the child's profile.
  3. 3.A magic sign-in link is generated. Open the link on the child's device.
  4. 4.The child is signed in automatically. No password is required.

Sign-in links expire after 1 hour

If the child does not open the link within an hour, generate a new one. Once the device is signed in, the session lasts until they sign out or the device is cleared.

Co-parenting

Co-parenting links two separate households so they can share children's profiles and selected events. Each household keeps its own independent calendar, tasks and settings.

Paid plan required

Co-parenting requires the paid plan on at least one of the linked households.

How to link households

  1. 1.Go to Settings → Co-parenting in your household.
  2. 2.Generate a co-parent invite link and send it to the other parent.
  3. 3.The other parent accepts the link from their household's Settings → Co-parenting.
  4. 4.Both households can then choose which child profiles to share.

What is shared

  • ✓Child profiles you choose to share
  • ✓Events you mark as 'Share with co-parent'
  • ✗Tasks, chores or lists
  • ✗Meals
  • ✗Logins or account access
