Tasks & chores
Chores & routines
Kerfuff has two types of tasks — chores for one-off or repeating jobs, and routines for daily habits. Both appear on the wall display and can be ticked off by anyone in the household.
Chores
A chore is a job that needs doing. It can be a one-off task or set to repeat on a schedule.
Repeat options
| Schedule | When it appears |
|---|---|
| Once | On the due date only. |
| Daily | Every day. |
| Weekdays | Monday to Friday. |
| Weekly | Same day each week. |
| Monthly | Same date each month. |
Repeat after completion
Enabling 'repeat after completion' means the chore reappears a set number of days after it is ticked off — rather than on a fixed calendar schedule. Useful for tasks like 'clean the filter' that should happen a certain interval after the last time, not on a fixed date.
Assigning chores
Assign a chore to one or more people in your household. It then appears in their section on the tasks view and on the wall display.
If you do not assign anyone and turn on 'up for grabs', anyone in the household can claim it — see below.
Up for grabs
Mark a chore as 'up for grabs' instead of assigning it to a specific person. It appears in a separate section with a dashed border — whoever gets there first can claim it.
How claiming works
- •An unassigned 'up for grabs' chore shows an 'I'll do it' button next to each person's name.
- •Tapping the button claims the chore for that person. The first to tap wins — a second tap from someone else shows 'Someone has already claimed that chore'.
- •Adults and owners can claim on behalf of anyone. Children can only claim for themselves.
- •Once claimed, the chore moves to that person's section and behaves like a normal assigned chore.
Up for grabs is chores-only
The 'up for grabs' option is only available on chores, not routines.
Routines
Routines are daily habits — things like 'brush teeth', 'take medication', or 'feed the cat'. They repeat every day and are grouped by time of day.
Time slots
Morning
Shown in the morning section. Good for pre-school habits.
Afternoon
Shown in the afternoon section. After school, mid-day.
Evening
Shown in the evening section. Bedtime routines.
Streaks
Routines track streaks — a count of consecutive days completed. A 🔥 icon and streak count appear on the task when the streak is above 1.
Skipped days do not break a streak but do not count towards it either. Missing a due day without marking it complete or skipped resets the streak to zero.
Shopping & to-do lists
Kerfuff has three types of list. All lists are shared across the household — anyone with a login can add and tick items.
Grocery
A shopping list. Grocery lists are pinned to the wall display in the today rail so you can see what to buy at a glance. Items can be grouped by section (Produce, Dairy, etc.).
To do
A general task list. Good for things that do not fit neatly as chores — project tasks, errands, admin.
Other
A free-form list for anything else — packing lists, wish lists, reading lists.
Ticking an item marks it as checked with a timestamp. Checked items can be cleared from the list in one tap.
Tasks on the wall display
The wall display shows chores and routines due today in the today rail (the side or bottom panel). Grocery lists also appear there.
- •Tasks assigned to the display's person appear if the display is set to 'One person only'.
- •All household tasks appear if the display is set to 'Shared'.
- •Tasks can be ticked directly from the wall display.
- •Up-for-grabs chores can be claimed from the wall display.
